Secret People: Individuals who have chosen to live a quiet life. They work hard, but don’t seek glory. They live their lives and unconsciously invite the rest of us watch. In this way, they inspire without meaning to, and profoundly influence the lives of those around them just by living.
My mom and dad live a quiet life in a little city tucked away in the heartland of the United States. To most they probably seem like any other nondescript couple; another person in the line at the store or the couple at the table across from you. Making a good life for me and my siblings came with days full of long hours and yet they still managed to find time to help with homework and make dinner. My mom exudes strength, and my father wisdom. You don't know them, there's no real reason you should, but you can trust me when I tell you they are absolute gems of people who love well and have a genuineness about themselves.
You have these people in your life, too. These people are everywhere and they are changing the world because they understand that the currency within us is what will ultimately change the world. Not fame or fortune -- but humor, intelligence, kindness, and a life well lived.
I call people like this Secret People because they are the unsung and unnoticed heroes. They make life better for all of us with their small acts of love, and I think it’s time you and I learned to hear their stories. Secret People know how to live simply in a world that nearly necessitates complications, and they value a life lived quietly in the face of almost constant noise. I want to see the beauty of Secret People’s lives, and enter into that beauty with them. I want to meet them where they live, on their back porches and city streets. I want to learn their way of gratitude, and challenge my unending desire for "more." For all these things, which I now see they give, it is the Secret People from whom we have the most to learn.
This website serves two different purposes. One part (the best part) will be to tell the untold stories of Secret People. The second, but still important part, will be my blog as I meet these Secret People and discover what it means to chase after their deeper reality and find fullness in it.
I can’t create a community here. It’s a website, not a living room. But I do hope this project inspires you to find your community. I hope it will lead you to invite your friends into your living room to hear their stories. I hope it drives you to figure out who you are and love who that is. Above all, I hope it will encourage you to find the Secret People all around you; those under-appreciated individuals who have changed and challenged you. When you identify who they are, thank them for being a Secret Person. It’s no small thing that they do.
